As you are all aware, the deadline to make a submission to Wicklow County Council regarding the Draft County Development 2016 – 2022 was last Friday, 19th Feb.
Our aim was to get as much support as possible for Objective RT17 focussed on implementing No Fry Zones within 400 metres of schools.
I contacted Wicklow County Council yesterday morning and they have begun the process of grouping submissions together that they received during the public consultation phase which began at the end of Nov 2015.
What we do know from our Face Book pages and the No Fry Zone 4 Kids Gmail account is that AT LEAST 130 submissions were made.
We are expecting a higher number than this and will confirm when Wicklow County Council provide an over-view of all submissions in the next couple of weeks.
The submissions made have come from across all segments of the community including;
· Up to 23 Healthcare Experts, Associations & Groups
o Professors in tackling obesity, public health, children health, human health & physiological health.
o Associations like the Irish Heart Foundation, ASOI Ireland (Association for the Study of Obesity on the Island of Ireland), HSE’s Healthy Eating Active Living programmes, Healthy Food For all, Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Institute (INDI), County Wicklow’s Partnership Healthy Made programme for Schools & Community and Irish Students Health Association.
o Individual Nutritionists and Dietitians, all members of INDI.
· Up to 15 Educational Bodies
o 3 – 4 Patron bodies of schools within Wicklow
o Board of Managements & Parents associations of schools across Wicklow.
· Up to 15 Elected Representatives, both Local and National
o Greystones Municipal District Council (6 councillors)
o 4 out of the 5 sitting Wicklow TD’s
o 4 other Wicklow Election candidates.
o 1 Senator
· Remainder being Residents and Parents.
It’s important to highlight that submissions have been made from other counties in support – Dublin, Galway, Cork, Louth and others
A more detailed break-down will be provided when submissions are confirmed by Wicklow County Council.
Wicklow County Council will go through all submissions made in detail across the County Development Plan.
Any amendments to the plan, including objective RT17 will then be voted on by the 32 Wicklow Councillors. I believe this vote is likely to be August time.
In the meantime, we as a committee are starting to look at how we can get this implemented nationally building on the tremendous support and backing this initiative has received from the public, the various different experts, interested bodies & elected officials indicated above.
A sincere thank you to everyone who made a submission in support of this initiative.
I am in no doubt that Wicklow County Council are clear on the action that they should take with respect to No Fry Zones around schools.

The No Fry Zone4Kids are seeking your support in order to make a change to the Wicklow County Development Plan 2016-2022 (the “WCDP”).
Supporting this campaign should take very little of your time, however your actions could have a significant impact on the rising levels of childhood obesity in our schools and could help to safeguard the future health of children in County Wicklow.
The proposal from the No Fry Zone campaign is very simple :
"If passed, the WCDP would be amended to include the following protection for children:
